What soil temperature grass seed actually germinates at

Grass seed germinates on soil temperature, not the calendar. The real thresholds by species, how long each takes, and why sustained warmth matters.

Grass seed does not know what month it is. It responds to the temperature of the soil around it, and until that soil is warm enough, seed sits there doing nothing except feeding birds.

This is the single most useful thing to understand about seeding a lawn, and it is the reason “seed in September” is bad advice in a cold September and unnecessarily cautious in a warm one.

The thresholds

Germination temperature is measured at around 5–7cm depth — roughly where the seed’s roots go looking for water. Every figure below is soil temperature at that depth, sustained rather than touched once on a warm afternoon.

Two things fall out of that table immediately.

Ryegrass is the easy one. It germinates lowest and fastest, which is why almost every “quick repair” mixture is ryegrass-heavy. If you are patching in early spring or late autumn, ryegrass is the species with a chance.

Bluegrass is the slow one. At 12–13°C and up to four weeks to establish, a Kentucky bluegrass lawn seeded too late simply will not make it before the cold arrives. This matters far more in the US and Canada, where bluegrass is a lawn staple, than in the UK, where it usually turns up as a minor component in a mixture.

Why sustained matters

A single warm day means nothing. Soil temperature at depth lags air temperature by days, and it swings much less: a 20°C afternoon in March might lift the top centimetre briefly while the seed zone stays at 7°C.

What you want is the threshold held. Mowdar looks for five consecutive days at or above the figure for your grass type before it says the window is open. That is deliberately conservative — seed is not expensive but a failed sowing costs you a month.

Spring versus autumn

The thresholds are the same in both directions, but the trajectory is not, and this is where most seeding goes wrong.

In spring, soil is warming. Cross 10°C in April and it will keep climbing: conditions get better after you sow. The risk is sowing too early into cold soil where seed sits and rots.

In autumn, soil is cooling. Cross 10°C going downwards in October and conditions get worse every day after you sow. The seed needs to germinate and establish a root system before growth stops around 5°C. This is why late-autumn seeding fails so often even when the day you sowed looked fine.

The practical rule: in autumn, work backwards. Take the days-to-germinate figure for your species, add three to four weeks of establishment, and check that the soil will still be above 8–10°C for that whole stretch.

The upper limit

There is a ceiling too. Above about 26°C soil temperature, cool-season seed germinates poorly and seedlings that do emerge are fighting heat stress with no root system. High summer is the worst time to seed a cool-season lawn, which is awkward, because it is also when most people notice their lawn looks bad.

What to actually do

  1. Find out what you have. UK lawns lean ryegrass and fescue; US and Canadian cool-season lawns lean bluegrass and tall fescue. It changes your threshold by four degrees.
  2. Watch soil temperature, not air temperature, and not the calendar.
  3. Wait for the threshold to hold for several days, not for one warm afternoon.
  4. In autumn, count backwards from the first hard cold rather than forwards from today.
