Feeding windows and why timing beats product choice

Which fertiliser you buy matters far less than whether the grass is growing when you spread it. What governs uptake, and when feeding is wasted.

Most of the effort that goes into lawn feeding is spent choosing a product. Most of the benefit is decided by when you apply it.

A mediocre fertiliser applied to actively growing grass will beat an excellent one applied to grass that is not growing. Every time.

Grass takes up nitrogen when it is growing

Nitrogen uptake is an active, energy-requiring process tied to growth. A plant growing hard pulls nitrogen in and builds it into leaf and root. A plant that is dormant, or shut down by heat or drought, takes up very little.

What happens to the rest is the problem. Nitrate is highly soluble and does not bind to soil particles, so what is not taken up moves with water — down past the root zone, and eventually into groundwater or a watercourse. That is the reason agricultural nitrogen application is regulated by season: it is a water quality issue, not just a waste of money.

So the question before you spread anything is: is this lawn growing right now?

What “growing” means in numbers

The turf industry uses growth potential — a curve peaking around 20°C mean air temperature for cool-season grass and falling away on both sides. Combined with day length, it gives a usable picture:

  • Near zero — winter, or the middle of a summer drought. The plant cannot use what you give it.
  • Low but rising — early spring. It can use a little, and a light feed helps it get moving.
  • High — late spring and early autumn. Peak uptake.
  • Falling from heat — high summer. Growth is suppressed and the plant is stressed; feeding adds to the stress.

The two obvious traps are the first warm week of spring, when the air is warm but the soil is cold and the grass is not moving, and a hot dry August, when it looks like the growing season but the plant has shut down.

Why heat and drought change the answer

In heat stress, cool-season grass reduces growth deliberately to conserve resources. Pushing nitrogen into it forces soft, leafy growth exactly when the plant most needs to be conserving — and soft growth is more susceptible to disease and less drought tolerant.

Drought is simpler: without water, nothing dissolves, nothing moves to the roots, and granular fertiliser sits on the surface. If it does rain, you then get all of it at once. Do not feed a lawn you cannot water.

Slow release changes the timing, not the principle

Slow-release and coated fertilisers release nitrogen over weeks, usually temperature-dependent — which is a genuine advantage, because release accelerates in exactly the conditions where the grass is growing faster.

But it does not rescue bad timing. Applying it in November means it releases through winter into grass that is not growing, and the nitrogen leaves in the drainage.

What actually matters, in order

  1. Is it growing? If not, stop here.
  2. Can you water it, or is rain coming? Granular fertiliser needs to be moved into the soil.
  3. Is it heat- or drought-stressed? If so, wait.
  4. Is the rate right? Over-application is the most common error and the most damaging one.
  5. Then, and only then, which product.
